Frequently Asked Questions:
S-Anon is hosting its own convention in January 2019 because our usual co-hosts, Sexaholics Anonymous (SA), accepted a bid to hold an SA convention in Spain in January 2019. S-Anon does not have the resources or the service structure to support a convention in Europe. Thus, SA will convene in Spain, with local S-Anon participation, and S-Anon will convene in North America, in Nashville, to be exact. This decision is in keeping with our separate and distinct fellowship service structures. There is no disagreement or conflict with SA involved in the decision. Our convention will be held, as usual, in July 2019 at the same time that SA holds its convention in Seattle.
Additional Information: Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) and S-Anon, as autonomous fellowships, have developed different organizational structures. SA's "regions" encompass overseas countries. In 2016, the S-Anon World Service Conference adopted a structure like Al-Anon’s. That is, North America is the "parent" service arm, and the N. America World Service Office (WSO) will assist other countries as appropriate to develop their own service structures. Thus, the N. America WSO does not support conventions in countries other than the U.S. and Canada. That is, we do not provide seed money, attendance by the International Convention Committee Chair or the WSO Executive Director, etc. There will be S-Anon participation at the SA convention in Spain, but support will be provided by the local S-Anon groups in Spain. S-Anons from all countries are invited to attend if they wish. Registration for the convention in Spain is available through the SA website.

Participants can register by mail or through the S-Anon online store. After expenses are covered, proceeds from International Conventions go to support the World Service Office.
*Meals will not be provided at the convention, registrants will be responsible for their own meals
The WSO is not able to offer scholarships. However, many meetings and Intergroups are offering scholarships for members in their areas. Those looking for scholarships are encouraged to contact their local groups or Intergroups for more information.
Cancellations and refund requests will be honored until January 4, 2019, and are subject to a $25.00 administrative processing fee. Cancellations can be made via email, firstname.lastname@example.org, or by calling the S-Anon World Service Office at 1(800)210-8141.
Registration transfers are permitted until January 4, 2019 and are subject to a $25.00 administrative processing fee.
The Inn at the Opryland is $139.00 a night, double Queen or single King, for convention attendees with no additional costs for room sharing. In order to receive this group rate, make your reservation under S-Anon International Convention by January 10, 2019 and enjoy the reduced rate January 15-23, 2019.
The WSO encourages everyone to book early. Since this is the first convention hosted by the WSO and we are uncertain how many S-Anon members will attend, a limited number of rooms were secured in the hotel contract. As long as there are rooms available at the hotel though, the group rate still applies to all attendees, even if the blocked rooms have been filled.
A secure Google Group has been set up to help attendees connect and plan prior to the convention. Please email the WSO for a Google Group invitation.
The Nashville International Airport is approximately 8 miles from The Inn at Opryland. Via the hotel shuttle, attendees can purchase roundtrip transportation for a reduced rate of $20.00. If choosing to travel through Uber or Lyft, participants can expect to pay $15-$20 one way (less if ride sharing!).
Though Nashville has plenty of transportation options when it comes to exploring the city, some may want to rent a vehicle for the weekend. There are a number of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, but for those who want to explore the many notable restaurants in Nashville, renting a car may be in your best interest.
Since this is the first ever international convention hosted by the S-Anon World Service Office without the usual co-hosts, Sexaholics Anonymous, we decided to stay on the safe side and not sign a contract that included a large catering minimum. Without knowing the level of participation, we had little bargaining room regarding the cost of meals. Typically, with both S-Anon and Sexaholics Anonymous present, we are able to guarantee a high level of attendance, which allows for free meeting space but is also associated with a high catering minimum. In other words, if this event is not well attended, we would have stood to lose a lot of money if we had guaranteed a large number of meals.
We are, however, planning a large number of gatherings of the full attendee group, so that we will hear speakers, etc. as a large (we hope) group and will have catered snacks at various points throughout the weekend.
The Planning Committee discussed the pros and cons of offering meals and decided that with the many restaurants in close proximity to the hotel, registrants would not be inconvenienced if responsible for planning their own meals. If we plan another WSO-sponsored S-Anon-only convention, we will have a better idea of attendance, and may be able to negotiate a different kind of contract.
A customized Google map has been created for registrants to use throughout the weekend. It shows over 20 restaurants that are within walking distance of the hotel:

The nearest grocery stores, Publix and Kroger, are 4.5 miles away. Each hotel room has a mini refrigerator and each floor has a shared microwave and vending machine.
The Atrium Cafe and Backstage Grill, with menus available for room service, are on the hotel premises.
Yes, a select number of meetings will be recorded. Recordings from these meetings, as well as speaker talks, will be made available on the S-Anon website after the convention. S-Ateen meetings will not be recorded.
For recorded meetings, we ask that all participants sign a release waiver giving permission for S-Anon International Family Groups, Inc. to distribute the recorded materials. Recorded meetings are made available as a resource to newcomers and S-Anon members, so we remind each other to follow the meeting guidelines for sharing.
We plan to have six S-Anon speakers. If you are interested in sharing your story, please let us know and complete a Speakers Pool Form
Please email the WSO and let us know you are available! We’re looking for members to serve as temporary sponsors, to lead meetings, work at the registration or literature table, welcome newcomers, etc.
There will not be a variety show at this convention, but we will have designated fellowship times and ice breakers for members to participate in. In addition to planned activities, the on-site restaurant offers nightly live music for attendees to enjoy, and as always, there will be an event to celebrate the years of S-Anon recovery represented among members attending the convention.
Childcare will not be provided by the hotel or by S-Anon during the convention, but there are many resources available within Nashville. Please call and ask the hotel concierge if you are interested in this kind of service.
This is an S-Anon and S-Ateen only event. Contact the local SA group or the SA Central Office in Nashville for a meeting schedule.
Yes. S-Ateen is a fellowship of young people (ages 12 – 19) who share their experience, strength and hope so that they may solve their common problems and help others to recover. The only requirement for membership is that there be a problem of sexaholism in a relative or friend.
We encourage you to invite S-Ateens to join us. We have separate S-Ateen breakout meetings, and S-Ateens are also welcome to attend any scheduled S-Anon meeting throughout the weekend.
Note: For convention activities, only registered S-Ateens (ages 12 to 19 years) are permitted, including all hotel areas where convention meetings take place. You are welcome, however, to bring your children not registered for the convention to stay with you in the hotel, and they are welcome to use the hotel facilities.
We believe sexaholism is a family disease because it affects all the members of the family emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes physically. As such, we have a reduced S-Ateen registration fee for our Nashville convention to make family recovery more affordable.
S-Ateen Registration: $10.00
